Mumia Abu-Jamal ~ When Democracy Equals Empire
Control Through War and Empire
When we think of Empire, we think of the current American Empire, the British Empire, other recent European conquering and colonizing nations including Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands, and then our stunted public education skips several centuries back to the Roman Empire. But there have been many more empires between and before, back throughout recorded human history. See below for the history. Meanwhile, here is what is going on currently.

This is an excellent short summry, except that Zinn fails to acknowledge that the 9/11 attacks were false flag operations.
John Perkins ~ The Secret History of American Empire
Video of book tour lecture. John Perkins, author of “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” and “The Secret History of American Empire,” worked with American intelligence agencies and multinational corporations to manipulate foreign leaders into following US foreign policy and corporate interests. He reveals “the grim underbelly of modern capitalism and neo-colonialism, and the ways in which international economic institutions hide their bid for hegemonic dominance under a liberal smokescreen of structural adjustment policies and modernization.” Perkins also makes several suggestions for transforming corporations.
Empires Through the Ages
Counting all the kingdoms and dynasties, there have been approximately 190 empires since the Old Kingdom of Egypt, the earliest empire on this list. You can click on the headers to sort by size and year. From these lists, it is clear that the people of this planet have experienced domination and control much more than we have experienced peace and freedom, beginning with these early influential empires:
- The Old Kingdom of Egypt peaked in 2400 B.C.
- The Akkadian Empire (Mesopotamia, Sumeria) — 2250 B.C.
- The Middle Kingdom of Egypt — 1850 B.C.
- The First Dynasty of Babylon — 1690 B.C.
- The New Kingdom of Egypt — 1300 B.C.
- The Archaemenid Empire (Persian Empire, which would later become Iran) — 480 B.C.
- The Macedonian Empire, which began the Hellenistic period of Ancient Greek civilization peaked from 334 B.C. to 323 B.C.
- The Roman Empire — 117 A.D.
- The Byzantine Empire — 555 A.D.
China had one empire and dynasty after another, and these were some of the largest:
- The Xia Dynasty — 1800 B.C.
- The Shang Dynasty — 1122 B.C.
- The Western Zhou Dynasty — 1042 B.C.
- The Qin Dynasty — 206 B.C.
- The Xin Dynasty — 10 A. D.
- The Han Empire — 100 A.D.
- The Tang Empire — 715
- The Mongol Empire peaked in 1270, led by Ghengis Khan, stretched across all of Europe and Asia, second in size only to the British Empire.
- The Ming Empire — 1450
- The Qing Empire — 1790
Kingdoms got consolidated, countries grew, and these were the largest recent European and Asian empires:
- The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth peaked in 1618
- The Swedish Empire — 1658
- The First French Colonial Empire — 1670
- The Ottoman Empire — 1683
- The Spanish Empire — 1740
- The Qing Empire — 1790
- The Danish Colonial Empire — 1800
- The Napoleonic Empire — 1813
- The Portuguese Empire — 1815
- The Russian Empire — 1866
- The Austrian Empire — 1866
- The German Empire — 1914
- The Belgian Empire — 1919
- The British Empire peaked in 1922 with the largest amount of land of any empire in history, 33.7 million square kilometers.
- The Second French Colonial Empire — 1938
- The Italian Empire — 1940
- The Dutch Empire — 1940
- The Japanese Empire — 1942
- Nazi Germany — 1942
That site lists the American Empire as peaking in 1899, which is ridiculous and brings the data of the entire site into question.
Countries Attacked By the United States
The following list of countries attacked by the United States since World War II is incomplete because it does not include proxy attacks or attacks it actively supported, such as East Timor. Also, there should probably be several additional African countries added to this list.
Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing as a Tool of Empire
Pretty much at the beginning of every single one of the empires listed at the website linked above, genocide or some sort of massacre of opposition was part of the foundation of the empire. Not a pretty picture. And there have also been additional genocides over control of land, resources, and people, so there have been more genocides than empires. I want to list some of the recent ones that people may not know about, because of the censorship of history by those that win the wars. Anyone ever heard of East Timor?
